STAIR: Sustainable Technology through Advanced Interdisciplinary Research

STAIR Students at Earth Day
April 30, 2011
Oak Ridge, Tennessee

STAIR students and an advisor presented sustainability topics and introduced an alternate idea for near urban commuting, the BugE®, a battery electric vehicle (BEV).

Booth visitors viewed information on nuclear power, reusable versus disposable water containers, and cloth bags versus plastic.

STAIR Associate N. Suraweera checks out the instrument panel of the BugE.

IGET Trainee K. Nguyen gets ready to try out the car. The BugE can be driven 30 miles on one charge for a cost of $0.25 per day.

The energy source is a 36 volt battery which can supply 60 amp hours (AH) of power.

Because cars are built to carry themselves around, reducing their weight reduces the energy drain. This vehicle weighs only 350 pounds.

A future driver investigates all the vehicle's features.

Earth Day attendees found the BugE concept to be very interesting.

The car's max speed is 45 mph.
