STAIR: Sustainable Technology through Advanced Interdisciplinary Research

Khoa Nguyen-Task 1 Team Member

Primary Research Advisor: Prof. Barry Bruce
Primary Research Task: Production of Hydrogen as a Potential Fuel Source Using the Photosystems of Algae and Photosynthetic Bacteria

I graduated UT in the fall of 2008 with a BS in Microbiology and entered the PhD program in BCMB in fall 2009. It was not until I started working as a Lab Technician/Research Assistant for Dr. Barry Bruce that I gained a better understanding and appreciation for the necessity of bio-energy research. Not only is bio-energy the foundation for our economic future, but it is also essential for our development as a species on this planet. I feel that the STAIR program is an excellent way of getting exposure to the current issues dealing with bio-energy and hopefully with this training, I can make contributions toward solving our current energy crisis.

On the rare occasion when I am outside of lab, I enjoy playing tennis, hiking, and mostly anything outdoors!

Research In working with Dr. Bruce, I am currently involved in the project addressing the interactions between Photosystem I and cytochrome c6. My contributions include cloning and mutagenesis of Photosystem I subunits from the thermophilic cyanobacterium Thermosynechococcus elongatus. After the desired mutations of the cloned Photosystem I subunits are achieved, my efforts will be directed toward transformation of T. elongatus, screening for homologous recombination, and isolation of the mutant Photosystem I complexes.
